  "Enhancing the Capacity of School Nurses and Practitioners to Reduce Excessive Anxiety in Children: The CALM Study”

  Excessive anxiety among elementary age students is common and severely impacts academic, social, and behavioral functioning. Less than half of children with anxiety receive the services they need to succeed in school. There is a critical need to expand the providers who can assist students with anxiety and address this obstacle to academic success. School nurses and practitioners may lack training in evidenced-based anxiety reduction interventions. The CALM study is funded to train school nurses and practitioners in brief interventions to reduce student anxiety. The presentation will include a review of the CALM Study and general childhood anxiety and pilot study outcomes.

  This talk will provide background on SARS-CoV-2 and its associated syndrome COVID-19 as it has evolved over time since its initial recognition in 2020. We will discuss some common manifestations and special considerations as it applies to pediatric patients, both in the acute phase and potential long-term sequelae. We will also educate the participants on the vaccines targeted to protect against COVID-19, and what school nurses can do in their communities to protect some of our most vulnerable patient populations.
