A Message from the Muscular Dystrophy Association

Posted about 6 years ago by Lori Kelley

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is looking for nurses (RNs, LPNs, etc.) to volunteer at the summer camps they run for children diagnosed with a neuromuscular disease. The camps are one-week overnight sessions and will be held at Variety Club Camp in Worcester, PA (about 30 minutes outside of Philadelphia). One session goes from June 9th -- 15th. The other session runs from June 16th -- 23rd. They  would love to be able to share this volunteer opportunity with our members. All food and lodging is provided. Our medical team oversees the health and welfare of the camp participants by administering medications, attending to bumps and bruises and so forth. Below is a description of the program:

As part of MDA’s over 60-year mission to improve the lives of children with muscular dystrophy and related life-threatening diseases, MDA’s summer camp program for kids ages 8-17 is offered at no cost to families. At MDA Summer Camp kids swim, play games, make arts & crafts, and participate in a camp dance!

But MDA can’t do it without volunteer medical staff to serve the camp community during this special week, providing first aid, dispensing medications, and delivering other medical care for campers so they can enjoy a fun and safe camp experience. These camp weeks will each serve approximately 45 campers from the Delaware Valley, South New Jersey, Central PA, and the Lehigh Valley.

To apply, go to mda.org/volunteer and look for Variety Club Camp -- Week 1 or Week 2.
