Functional neurological symptoms are common in children and adolescents, manifested by symptoms such as paralysis, numbness, and non-epileptic events. A biopsychosocial approach is critical in the diagnosis, assessment, and management of these youth and engage many systems including health and educational settings. Multidisciplinary teamwork can elicit optimal outcomes for functional symptoms. This presentation will focus on the clinical presentations of functional neurological symptoms, the diagnostic process, and management strategies. Miya Asato MD is a pediatric neurologist at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Taylor Naus, LCSW is a behavioral health therapist whose practice is embedded in the Division of Child Neurology at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
